Get a grip on business, banks urge farmers

FARMERS must take a firm financial grip on their business and tell their banks just as soon as things go wrong, warns Iain Clark, an agricultural specialist with Clydesdale Bank.

He said: “The severity and speed of the downturn has taken our customers, and to some extent, ourselves, by surprise. Farmers must keep us informed.”

Mr Clark conceded that farming was a “challenge” at the present time. But he did not expect to see a flood of farm sales or a collapse in the price of land.

He was speaking at ANMs Thainstone market.
