Get closer to the market, farmers told

FARMERS have a bright future there for the taking – the key is to have clear goals, cooperate and be determined, listeners heard at the Royal Smithfield Show.

“Promotion of local, regional and British produce has a range of marketing opportunities, and we need to work together to achieve goals,” said Susanne Austin from the Cotswold Food Group, which promotes locally produced foods.

“We have had problems in the past, but this has led to prosperity. The consumer is on our side and we have to provide what they want.”

David Kaye, from Dairies Direct, helped set up a franchise set up to enable producers to market milk directly to customers at supermarket prices.

“Getting closer to the market has meant that farmers are seeing improved margins of 9ppl, or 30,000 per year,” he said.

Robin Hobson, from consultants Laurence Gould, said luck and determination are the key. He added: “The more you try the luckier you get.”
