Gleam gains shine
GLEAMS relatively poor performance in 1996 may have been partly due to BaYMV infection. The Agricultural Research Centre considers the variety only tolerant rather than resistant to the disease, having found low levels of infection at some sites last year using the ELISA technique.
"But we are confident it is resistant," says NIABs Richard Fenwick. Problems with last seasons seed stocks may account for the mixed views, he says.
New Farm Crops Simon Philips confirms that all Gleam seed sold for this autumns sowings should be BaYMV resistant.n
