Global GMO talks run out of time
NEGOTIATIONS to forge a UN biosafety protocol governing the international movement of genetically modified (GM) organisms have collapsed.
Delegates from 170 countries meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, failed to agree on fundamental trade issues within the protocol.
Time ran out with many key issues unresolved and no agreement on how the the protocol would work in practice.
Agreement was made among small groups to exclude commodities and pharmaceuticals from the protocol but this is yet to be agreed by all delegates.
