AN ORGANIC farmer goes to court tomorrow (Thursday) to challenge a Government decision to let his neighbour to grow genetically modified maize.

Guy Watson, who farms near Totnes, Devon fears that the nearby weedkiller-resistant GM maize could contaminate his organic crop of sweetcorn and cost him thousands of pounds.

The GM crop is only two weeks away from flowering and the two crops could cross-pollinate. Mr Watsons court challenge is backed by Friends of the Earth and the Soil Association.

The Soil Association is monitoring the sweetcorn crop for any signs of contamination. If contamination is found, Mr Watsons farm could lose its organic status and the sweetcorn will plummet in value.
