Good demand for milk cattle

A HEALTHY demand for milking cattle at last weeks Western Holstein Club show and sale at Beeston Castle prompted auctioneer Clive Norbury to describe trade for the best heifers as "absolutely super".

In total, the 99 females on offer averaged £884 with cows at £936 and heifers at £865 on a day when every milking female found a buyer. The averages showed an increase of £66 for cows and £52 for heifers compared with the previous months sale.

A new farm for Whitchurch milk producers R L Edwards and Partners saw them in the market for some choice lots to establish a firm foundation for their new unit at Tilstock. They paid the days highest price of 2200gns for a smart calved-heifer from John Tomlinsons Actonfarm herd at Nantwich, Cheshire.

Actonfarm Ivann Beatexus 4th is a third calver, which has recently been classified Excellent and represents seven generations in the top grade. She is by Iv-Ann Mark Tesk and out of a four-times 11,000kg-plus Vanguard dam.

Also claimed by the Edwards team was Barlowfarm Brook Aloysia from D and A Haworth, Chorley, Lancs. This 1998-bred daughter of the Blackstar son Bubbling-Brook Deluxe is out of a Starbuck dam. She made 1300gns.

The bid was matched for a calved heifer from regular sale supporters Ray Brown and Partners of the Bidlea herd at Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. Bidlea Outside Tagasling – bred from one of the herds most durable cow families – is out of a twice 10,000kg plus dam by Dombinator and was bought by Tollemache Farms.

Dalebank Roxy 13th, a freshly calved heifer by Aldingham Dalutz made 1200gns for David Rees Farms, Nantwich, bought by M Armour, Dumfries. The Edwards partnership paid the next three highest prices giving 1120gns for an Actonfarm heifer by Aerostar Raven, and 1100gns for an R C Matt cow from R J Clare and Partners (Market Drayton) Hawksmoor herd.

They also paid 1100gns for the champion, Copywood Lee Maybelle, a Comestar Lee second calver bred from the White Cow family at Roybrook, shown by Andrew and Belinda Fox, Matlock, Derbys (Wright Manley). &#42
