Good quality milling wheat

MICHAEL HOWIE, who farms near Amble in Northumberland has combined all his quality milling wheat and is now waiting for the weather to dry out so he can get the feed wheat in.

Shamrock and Malacca have averaged 8.1t/ha (3.3t/acre). "We expect 3.5t/ace (8.6t/ha) on milling wheat, but the quality was good and the premium is equivalent to a 4t/acre (10t/ha) feed crop."

Shamrock was slightly higher in protein at 14%, the Hagbergs varied around 330 and the specific weight was 80Kg/hl. "Its all made milling standard."

They have combined one field of Claire feed wheat, a first crop yielding about 10t/ha (4t/acre) and then it rained. "Up until now we have been lucky in that we’ve combined between 17-18% and not up to 25% like last year."
