Good results from flooded Malacca
GRAHAM BIRKETT is happy to have achieved an estimated 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) from his Malacca winter wheat at Bunkers Hill Farm, near Hook in Hampshire.
Much of his 32ha (80 acres) of the crop spent the winter under water after the River Whitewater overflowed.
“We got 3.75t/acre (9.4t/ha) last year. But the river, which is normally only 6ft wide, spread to 200 yards and we lost about four acres.”
Combined before the latest rain the Hagberg was 350 with protein at 11.5-12%. “Given the circumstances I am quite pleased.”
