Government confirms lindane ban

By FWi staff

THE government has confirmed that the pesticide lindane has been banned as a seed treatment following advice from the Advisory Committee on Pesticides.

Junior farm minister Jeff Rooker said he had carefully considered all the arguments since the government announced on 18 June that it planned to implement a ban.

“Although these representations were often detailed, they contained no new scientific data”, he added.

“We have therefore acted to protect the health of workers in the country.”

The Advisory Committee on Pesticides was concerned that treating seed with lindane could expose farm workers to unacceptable levels of the pesticide.
