Grain pests on trial
PESTS in grain stores could be detected earlier than ever if a new line of research at the Central Science Laboratory bears fruit.
The work involved adding a lure to Pitfall Cone traps, said Dr Ken Wildey. Correctly used PC traps already spotted the presence of insects in grain much sooner than conventional spearing and sieving, he said. "But we believe there is a need to detect beetles even earlier."
The new multi-species lure, which could take the form of a tablet, has shown considerable promise in trials. Baited PC traps caught 12 times as many insects as unbaited ones over the same period. *
