Grass weeds run riot
WATCH out for large populations of grass weeds in over-wintered rape crops. Problems are emerging after poor conditions for residual herbicides and cultivations last autumn.
Weeds are now competing and need controlling, say advisers. Rapid canopy development in the autumn is partly to blame for poor early control, says agronomist Richard Elsdon, of United Oilseeds.
"Farmers are going to have to decide what to do pretty quickly, and they may have to look at droplet size, nozzles and pressures to get the spray into the crop."
A range of graminicides is available. But some may be approaching the end of their safe recommendation period, warns Mr Elsdon. Take advice before buying and spraying, he urges.
