Guernsey horticulture diversifies

GUERNSEYS horticultural industry is “reinventing” itself, according to a Financial Times in a survey of the Channel Islands industry.

Famed so long for the “Guernsey Tom” tomato, the islands horticultural industry is moving into new markets.

Greater emphasis is placed on postal flowers, plant production, cut flowers and a few niche edibles such as herbs, mushrooms, asparagus and capsicums.

The government has recently approved sweeping changes as to how financial aid is allocated to the sector.
