MOST payments under MAFFs habitat scheme are set to increase from April, junior farm minister Tim Boswell has announced.
The voluntary scheme, which was launched in 1994, has so far attracted about 300 farmers who have entered about 5000ha (12,350 acres) into 10- to 20-year management agreements. These cover designated water fringes, former five-year set-aside land and coastal saltmarsh.
Mr Boswell said this was "an encouraging start overall". *
