Hampshire Downs do well
GENETIC improvements in the Hampshire Down Sheep Sire Reference Scheme show a doubling of both eight week weight and scan weight estimated breeding values over the past 12 months, says Signets Maurice Jones.
"The rate of increase in the scan weight EBV, an indicator of growth potential, between 2001 and 2002 was 20% more than the total of the previous three years. In addition, the rate of increase in muscling was 50% higher than the previous year," says Mr Jones.
Rams in the top 10% of the scheme will leave lambs worth an extra £1.92 each, compared with the average, potentially worth a total of £460 over a rams productive lifespan, he adds. *
