Hard cheese for Tornegus maker

GOURMET cheesemaker James Alldridge has had seven tons of Tornegus cheese worth £50,000 impounded by Reigate magistrates.

The decision follows public health minister Tessa Jowells approval of an Emergency Control Order against Alldridges supplier Ducketts of Wedmore, Somerset, after a boy who ate some Ducketts cheese was found to be suffering from a minor case of E coli.

A two-day hearing was adjourned yesterday to allow Alldridge, who runs East Side Cheese, with his wife Pat, at Godstone, Surrey, to challenge the validity of the ministers order. Tandridge District Council had applied to magistrates for the stock to be destroyed.
