Heifer shortages?

THE UK dairy industry could find itself dangerously short of quality dairy heifers in the national herd in 1997-98 after a 10% swing from dairy to beef inseminations in the first half of this year.

The fall in the price of dairy heifers from a peak of about £1100-£1200 in spring 1994 to about £850 now was cited as one reason for the switch from dairy sires by Genus marketings, Stephen Dann. Similarly, he said, black-and-white bull calves had dropped in price from a peak of £200 to £150-£160 a head. &#42
