Heifer shows style and balance of a champion
By Jeremy Hunt
STYLE and balance won the day at the Lancaster Holstein Dairy Sales fixture, according to judge John Barton of Bury, Lancs who awarded the championship to a calved heifer from the Dunnerdale herd.
The Boow familys Dunnerdale Rudolph Kathie 2nd, a 26-month-old entry from their herd at Millom on the west Cumbria coast, went on to attract a flurry of bids to make the days top price with a 1400gns call from Isle of Man buyers Messrs Kinnvig.
Kathie 2nd is by Startmore Rudolph and out of a Sunnylodge Linjet dam. Her grand-dam was a VG86 daughter – who had given 9000kg of milk – of Hanoverhill Victor. She has a PIN +£19 and PLI +£25 and was giving 33kg after a mid-May calving.
Another member of the herds Kathie family stood champion at the clubs April fixture.
The Italian bull Fermo Aerostar Raven sired Audbrook Amelia 14th, which realised 1000gns for R T Gibson and Son, Kendal. This heifer, which stood second in the senior heifer class, is bred from the hard-wearing, milky Amelia family from the Copperidge herd and is out of a Warden dam. Buyers were M and G Booth for their Lothersdale herd on the Lancs/Yorks border.
The Gibson family were again among the higher prices when one of their heifers reached 880gns. Audbrook Mystic 37th, which topped the senior heifers, is by Donnandale Skychief and out of a GP-82 Warden cow with three generations of VGs behind her. She was one of two heifers sold to J D Bowness, Penrith. They also gave 880gns for Luptonhall Lo Lilac, a freshly calved daughter of the Dutch bull Straks Leompia consigned by J M Barton and Sons, Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria.
The Dennison family, regular consignors of high production heifers to this sale from their Denmire herd at Ulverston, Cumbria, saw two of their entries at 880gns. Denmire Mason Norma 24th, giving over 35kg, was one of three purchases heading home with Huddersfield, West Yorks dairy farmers M and M Sykes.
Norma 24th is out of a VG88 Inspiration dam that gave just under 10,000kg as a heifer. And there was plenty of milk to look forward to from the calved heifer Foxhole Ivann Mark Rowena, also paraded by the Dennisons. Out of a Broker dam she was giving a massive 42kg on the day and also made 880gns to Wrea Green, Lancs, buyers J E Walton and Sons.
Averages five cows £697, 48 heifers £683. (Norton and Brooksbank with Lancaster Auction Mart) *
