High PIN numbers main feature of Lincs sale

THE first part of the dispersal of G Russon & Partners Lincs-based Ruston herd of Holstein Friesians, featuring many autumn and New Year calvers, reached 660gns at Uttoxeter Auction Mart.

The 40-strong consignment included cattle from the herds high yielding families which, in the present trade, looked a sound investment for buyers.

High PIN numbers were a feature of the sale which presented daughters by sires such as Ferrari, Sunny Boy, Ideal, Wade, Thor and Geoffry. The herds average PIN is £65.

The days top price was paid for Ruston Thor Trudy, a third calver by Rosparry Thor. She had a PIN of £123 – putting her close to the UKs top 10% – and calved last September after putting an impressive 11,794kg in the tank during her second lactation. She was giving 43.4kg on the day and was bought by Mr Busby, Stafford.

The sale also drew two 550gns bids. The first came for the freshly calved heifer Ruston Ingot Snowdrift, a daughter of AG High Sights BS Ingot. She had a PIN of £79 and was had by R Fenton, Eccleshall.

The second calver, the OB Blackstar Wade daughter Ruston Wade Snowfall, had been milking since November and was classified GP 82. She was sold giving 32.8kg.

Commenting on the trade in general Meg Mellor of auctioneers Bagshaws said it was very difficult to assess where the trade is going from week to week. Despite the quota situation buyers are looking for cows and theres plenty of demand among suckler men for the lower end of the dairy cow market, said Miss Mellor. &#42
