INCREASED set-aside next season could mean reduced seed prices, according to the Home-Grown Cereals Authority.

HGCA analysts say seed prices this season could fall by as much as £10/ tonne on the back of the EUs decision to increase set-aside to 10%.

The trend towards using more farm-saved seed could further pressure seed prices. But the use of any farm-saved seed will depend on the quality of this seasons harvest.

While it is likely that all seed prices will fall, the cost of the lesser-used varieties that remain in short supply will continue to maintain their current price levels, the HGCA predicts.
