Highland breeders protest to Hogg
HIGHLAND cattle breeders are dismayed at the prospect of cattle over 30 months being removed from the food chain.
Breed secretary Hamish Wilson has written to farm minister Douglas Hogg asking him to reconsider the decision or at least allow a dispensation for registered pedigree Highland cattle. The average slaughter age of 425 pure Highland steers in a government-backed scheme was 36 months.
A copy has been sent to every MP who has a Highland cattle fold in his constituency. Galloway breeders are calling for a similar exemption to the 30-month or four-hard-teeth rule.
