How the top prizewinners showed meat expertise…

The best of British meat – and meat products – have been showcased recently so

whether your favourites beef, pork or lamb, these highlights will get your mouth watering

JASON Howlett, chef at the Ring OBells in Thornton, Bradford, proved that he makes the best steak pie in Britain when he won the exciting cook-off final for the British Meat Steak Pie of the Year competition at MLC headquarters in Milton Keynes.

In a tense battle between the six finalists, Jasons creation (Prime beef with whiskey and wild mushrooms encased in a short-crust pastry with haggis mashed potato topping) proved to have what it takes to win the coveted title Steak Pie of the Year 2002. He also wins £500 marketing support for his pub and £100 cash and a set of Stellar Sabatier Chefs Knives worth £500 for himself.

Jason has been first chef at the Ring OBells in Thornton for four years and is one of a six strong team of permanent chefs employed by owners Ann and Clive Preston. The pub has been owned by the Prestons for over 10 years and food has always been a roaring trade for them. All meat is locally sourced, with the Prestons relying on their butcher for advice regarding the best cuts to suit their menu. Pies have always been a particular speciality and the pub has been a finalist in the Steak Pie of the Year competition for the last five years running.
