HSE blitz for north west

NORTH-WEST farms are to be targeted by the Health and Safety Executive in an inspection blitz coinciding with EU health and safety week (Oct 7-13).

HSE inspector Nic Ratty said the potato harvest would be at its height during the inspection and the HSE wanted to ensure that adequate safety measures were in place, particularly to protect the many seasonal workers.

During a smaller campaign in Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester in July Mr Ratty reported that work had to be stopped on 10% of jobs inspected.

HSE inspectors can serve farmers with a written notice to rectify any faulty equipment, with a follow-up check to ensure the work has been carried out. Where life may be endangered the inspectors have the power to issue a prohibition notice stopping use of the equipment. &#42
