India pressed on maize duty

THE Indian government is coming under pressure to withdraw a customs duty on maize, reports the Financial Times.

Poultry industry representatives warn the duty, levied for the first time this month, will hit small farmers who depend on poultry production.

India is charging 15% duty on imports of up to 350,000 tonnes and 50% thereafter.

The poultry industry will be particularly badly hit because this comes at a time when egg and broiler prices are falling.
