Indonesia lifts palm-oil ban

INDONESIAS palm oil export ban was lifted yesterday (Wednesday, 22 April) and replaced by an export tax. But merchants are yet to be told how the new taxation system will work.


About 100,000 tonnes of palm oil is awaiting loading at the port of Belawan. Trade sources say that it is likely to be exported on to the world market, despite an export tax expected to be set at 40%.


Government officials banned palm oil exports in January to stabilise prices in the country, which had boomed after the Indonesian currency crashed last year. Subsequent price rises sparked food riots in various cities.
