Interest-rate surprise for City

THE Bank of England surprised City experts this morning by increasing interest rates by 0.25% to 7.5%.

The move confounded analysts who had expected rates to be held at 7.25% over fears that the economy was sliding into recession.

The rate rise is sixth since Labour came to power a year ago.
