FARM management company Mamco, run by farmer Doug Niven from Duns in Berwickshire, is the first UK farm business to secure the international environmental management standard ISO 14000.
"Its purpose is to check that we monitor the environmental impact of our farming operations in all areas, from spreading, sowing and spraying, to sales, marketing and purchasing," says the companys Rebecca Vellacott.
Compliance with legislation is the minimum standard. At Mamco the environmental package includes budgeting energy efficiency, management plans for storage and waste disposal and precision farming to reduce inputs in the long term. *
