Junior may be keen on green
LORD Whittys attitude towards agriculture is a grey area but his membership of Friends of the Earth suggests he will be keen to promote green issues.
The life baron, who has been appointed a junior minister in DEFRA, previously held the job of minister for roads and road safety at the outgoing Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions.
Lord Whitty gained some experience of the problems facing farming during the fuel protests in September 2000. As roads minister, it was his responsibility to meet representatives of the agriculture and haulage industries to discuss a possible cut in fuel duty. *
New minister Lord Whitty may be green in more ways than one.
