Keepers blame shepherd for hawk poisoning

GAMEKEEPERS denied suggestions they have been solely responsible for a spate of poisoning of rare birds, following the death of seven red kites during the past year.

The seven red kites killed were part of a five-year project by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to reintroduce them to the wild.

The Scottish Gamekeepers Association claims the latest killing was perpetrated by a shepherd. The bird was found dying on farmland in west Strathearn.

The association also cast doubts as to whether another red kite found in Perthshire had been the victim of a gamekeeper.
