Late start on winter barley
JOHN DRYSDALE, who farms near Kirkcaldy in Fife, started combining Pearl winter barley on Wednesday (15 August).
Weather has not been kind. There has been 18mm of rain since 1 August. “We are 10 days to two weeks behind where we were at this stage last year.”
Pearl has yielded 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre), which is below average. “It was not good as it was drilled late.”
He hopes to start oilseed rape on Friday. Spring barley and some wheat will be fit in 10 days. Spring beans are also grown on the varied sand-clay loam an dthey will be ready in September.
