Live exporters deny sheep cruelty

AN ANIMAL export firm was accused of causing unnecessary suffering to 2,500 sheep on a Channel ferry at Folkestone and Hythe Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday).

The court heard that Brindie Ltd, of Abergavenny, Gwent, exported the animals from Dover to Dunkirk on 19 January 1998 in gale force winds when transportation would usually be halted.

The private prosecution is being brought by Captain Malcolm Conyers under the 1997 welfare of animals during transport order.

The company has entered a plea of not guilty.
