Lives at £50+ – a good bet

LOOKING to reinvest the proceeds of cull ewe sales in ewes and lambs? Then expect to pay about £40 a life for a typical outfit, with the best at over the £50-mark.

At Gloucester on Monday, for example, auctioneer Chris Voyce saw a top price of £59 a life.

Buoyant cull ewe and finished sheep prices are behind the strong demand, reckons Mr Voyce. Spring weather boosted confidence and didnt hurt, either, he reckons.

As long as the ewes are reasonably sized and in good condition, age is not too important, says Mr Voyce. "Buyers are aiming to get the lambs sold early, and then sell the ewes as culls."n
