Low-cost eggs

OOCYTE recovery, the technique to collect immature eggs from the ovaries of cows, has been made cheaper with the development of low-tech equipment by Canadian vet Dr Brian Hill.

The equipment, costing only £270, relies on manual palpation of the ovaries instead of a scanner.

In addition the use of low-tech equipment means that producers themselves can assist the ET technician, so saving the cost of an assistant, says Mr Kuehner.
