PETER LUFF, the Tory MP and chairman of the Agriculture Select Committee, is considering what action to take following newspaper reports that he earns thousands of pounds from a lobbying firm linked to the biotechnology giant Monsanto.

Two Sunday papers reported yesterday that Mr Luff, the MP for Worcester, receives £10,000 a year from Bell Pottinger, which names Monsanto among its clients.

The revelation was made by The Observer, and also reported in the Sunday Times.

The Observer acknowledged that Mr Luff had declared his earnings in the Parliamentary Register of Members Interests.

“Yet several members of the Agriculture Select Committee contacted by The Observer had no idea Mr Luff had been paid by a lobbying firm,” it added.

The Sunday Times reported that Mr Luff worked as an “adviser on political affairs”, but only for one Bell Pottinger client, the Chamber of Shipping.

The paper added: “Bell Pottinger also acts for Monsanto, one of the leading GM firms in Britain.”

Mr Luff has denied any conflict of interest and claims he contacted Elizabeth Firkin, the Parliamentary standards watchdog, after he became aware of the Monsanto link.

According to BBC radios Farming Today programme this morning, Mr Luff is now considering complaining to the Press Complaints Commission.
