Malaysians step up pig slaughter

MALAYSIAN troops stepped up the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of pigs in a bid to stop a virus outbreak that has killed at least 61 people.

The government has allowed the use of carbon monoxide gas to speed up the cull.

The Japanese encephalitis virus, spread by Culex mosquitoes but harboured in pigs, has ravaged Malaysias M$1.5 billion (£242m) pig industry.
