Malting barley championship

A SAMPLE of Fanfare from Peter Rudds Roper Farm, Melton Constable, Norfolk has won top honours in the Institute of Brewings national malting barley competition for England and Wales.

Runner-up is Julian Sturdy of Westgate Farm, North Deighton, Wetherby, with a sample of Optic.

Despite an 84% increase in spring barley sowing in England and Wales competition entries were about 25% down, reflecting the large proportion of the crop which was caught by unfavourable weather, says Michael Banks of merchant Banks Cargill.

Breeder Nickerson has been awarded the Thompson Perpetual Challenge trophy for its winter malting variety Pearl. The trophy is awarded when a variety makes a significant advance for the malting and brewing industry. Previous winner was Optic. &#42
