Malting Barley to bag exports
A NEW specialist malting barley company will be launched later this month, sourcing grain through co-ops and farmer-controlled businesses.
The Malting Barley Company is being set up by ex-Allied Grain (South) trader Peter Crisford and will operate from Melksham, Wilts. West Midland Farmers and Wessex Grain are also shareholders.
Increasing world demand for malt, especially in the Far East, will create plenty of opportunities to sell barley to UK and Continental maltsters, says Mr Crisford. The UK already exports about 30% of its malt output and this is set to grow.
As such, malting barley growers can look forward to similar premiums in 1996 to those they earned last harvest, he predicts. *
