Malting crisis meeting set for next week

FIVE leading malting barley growers from Norfolk have called an open crisis meeting next Tuesday to thrash out a future for the crop.

The aim is to agree an action plan that will return the crop to profit. If necessary, that could include a boycott unless suitable long-term contracts can be procured from maltsters, says north Norfolk grower Teddy Maufe.

"Promises of jam tomorrow have worn a bit thin. If another maltster tells me all it needs is for everyone in China to drink another half pint I shall pour a half pint over his head."

The meeting is at Easton College, Norwich, at 8.30am on Aug 13 and should only take an hour, he says. "We want to keep it short and sharp because we know people will be anxious to get combining."
