SURREY farmer Robert Gray will be among the thousands of runners on the streets of London on Sunday (Apr 13) competing in the Flora London Marathon.

Robert farms with his parents, John and Evelyn, elder brother James and sister Margaret at Goldstone Farm, Great Bookham, near Leatherhead. They milk 120 pedigree Ayrshire cows, finish beef cattle, including their bull calves, and grow 65ha (160 acres) of barley and wheat.

He only took up running last year, beginning with five mile runs after work on light summer evenings. In October he tackled a half marathon but went "too fast too soon".

His brother spurred him into entering the London marathon with a bet and he will be one of about 200 runners in Steve Crams Macmillan marathon team. They will be raising money for the Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund, which provides treatment and support for cancer sufferers and their families. Robert hopes to raise at least £3000 and possibly £5000 for this worthy cause.
