Markets unmoved by N African sales: HGCA

Wednesday, 18 April, 2001

  • EU grain prices were thinly traded last week as markets wound down for the Easter period.

MATIF May and July wheat traded steady between Euro118-119/t, responding little to Moroccos and Egypts purchase of French wheat of 50,000 and 30,000 tonnes respectively.

Trade in German markets was also quiet with the gap between buyers and sellers reportedly too wide to strike up much interest.

  • Euro interest rates unchanged

The European Central Bank left interest rates unchanged at 4.75%, despite the expectations of a quarter-point cut, amid fears of slower economic growth in the EU.

The Euro hit 90US¢ on Monday before slipping back to 88US¢ later in the week.

  • Euro1 = 61.31p or 87.91US&¢ on 17 April
