KEEPING simple mastitis records has helped Devon producer Jerry Alford reduce clinical cases.
When his vet Andrew Biggs analysed records a year ago at Silverton Park Farm, Exeter, he found incidence was above average at 43 for the 100 cows. In the last year levels have been reduced to under 30 cases in 100 cows.
"A detailed recording system allowed us to identify problem cows," says Mr Alford. "A combination of treating high cell count cows during lactation and extra attention at drying off, by identifying the actual bacteria responsible, was successful.
And when all else failed, cows were culled."
