Melton Mowbray sees Friesian x as champion

A FRIESIAN x Bazadais steer raised and shown by Marcus Smith took the championship at Melton Mowbray YFCs 60th annual calf show and sale.

The Lloyds Bank-sponsored contest involves buying calves at three weeks of age and raising them through the winter. This year 25 members took part and the winning animal weighed 620kg and made 112p/kg. Jacqui Meakins Charolais was reserve champion weighing in at 484kg and selling at 111.5p/kg. Peter Haynes was top junior member and the award for the best turned out animal and handler went to Kelly Inman.
