Mercedes creates a stir with six-wheel-drive

Aint no mountain high enough…this six-wheel-drive, three-axle Unimog is one of two prototypes currently being tested by Mercedes. Designed mainly for military and utility use, Mercedes says there has also been agricultural interest in the vehicle as a base unit for a 10t lime spreader. The Unimogs six wheels are driven by a 240hp engine through a 16F/8R box; there is a total of four diffs – one on each axle and an inter-axle lock between the second and third axles. It is also fitted with Central Tyre Inflation (Machinery, July 21) which enables on-the-move adjustment of tyre pressures. Note air pipe from hub to valve (inset photo, right).
