THE rumen-protected methionine product Smartamine from Rhône-Poulenc is now available in the UK.
The company claims European-wide research shows that adding protected methionine to diets sufficient in lysine boosts milk protein content by 0.15% and enhances protein yield by 50-70g a cow a day.
Fed at the recommended rate of 12g/cow/day, this extra performance boost could lift margins by £50 a cow, claims Rhône-Poulenc.
Methionine and lysine have been identified as the two main limiting amino acids in milk protein synthesis. However, Rhône-Poulenc says that while most UK diets contain sufficient lysine, they are deficient in methionine. *
