Milk Marque expected to spilt

MILK Marque, the countrys biggest supplier of raw milk, is expected to confirm on Friday that it is to be broken up into three separate regional companies.

The farmer-owned co-operative will voluntarily split into three companies covering the south, the Midlands and the north, according to various recent reports.

If a split is confirmed, it will be a bitter blow for Poul Christensen, Milk Marques chairman who indicated last year that such a move would be disastrous for producers

“It is perverse in the extreme for farmers organisations to get smaller when the rest of the dairy industry is rationalising and getting bigger, he told producers last April.

The Financial Times predicted a few weeks ago on 7 September that Milk Marque could split to overcome rules restricting its involvement in the milk processing sector.

A similar report appeared in the Dairy Industry Newsletter two days later.

The latest report, broadcast on Thursday by BBC Radios Farming Today, echoed those predications.

But a Milk Marque spokeswoman declined to comment on the accuracy of any of the reports but said the company would make an announcement on Friday.

Any new reports until then are just speculation, she said.

But she confirmed: “A voluntary split is one of the options which we have been considering as everybody knows.”
