MILK Marque is to restart its milk selling round after putting the farmers case to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

This follows the refusal of the major dairy companies to bid for milk in contracts commencing October 1.

“Over the next month we shall be talking to our customers – many of whom have already been in touch with us,” says Paul Beswick, managing director of Milk Marque. “Having listened to their views, we will get on with the business of selling our milk.”

However, he warned that farmers would not accept successive rounds, as seen in January, which force down the milk price: “We see little point in proceeding to a second bidding round as there is no evidence it would affect bidding behaviour. There are a number of ways forward for us – we are determined to get better prices for our members.”
