The Charles Holt/FARMERS WEEKLY profile put the butterfat adjusted volume for the month at 1.156bn litres.
The deficit for the milk year so far has widened to 211m litres, with two months to go.
Producers also overtook volume figures in the same month two years ago, said Charles Holt at the Farm Consultancy Group.
The comparison is important, because 2002/03 also saw low production accelerating towards the end of the milk year, producing a glut.
“People have their feet hard on the gas now, and what we’re doing in January 2005 is interesting for April,” added Mr Holt.
