Ministry urges natural solution to fly pest

THE Ministry of Agriculture and the agricultural consultancy ADAS are urging farmers to use non-chemical means to control the problem of flies on the farm.

This could mean collecting chicken litter in battery units on conveyor belts, before drying it with fans and introducing carnivorous beetles to eat the fly maggots.

The ministry says pyrethroid insecticides can still be used as sprays in animal and poultry houses, provided they are not used more than once a week.
