Mixed reaction to new initiative
COGENT attracted mixed industry and farmer support at its launch last week.
"We think it is a scheme worth supporting and hope the rest of the industry will as well," says CWS Agriculture general manager Mike Calvert. His view is echoed by Holstein Friesian Society chief executive Duncan Spring: "We are delighted with the initiative ," he says. "Any scheme that increases the number of young bulls tested in the UK can only be good news for the industry and must be applauded."
A large milk producer acknowledged the longer-term benefits of the scheme but felt it was less attractive for larger herds.
Would the half-priced semen cover annual membership costs, the extra young sire semen needed to inseminate all miling heifers and the risks of using unproven genetics?
