Mixes on the wild side

WILDflower mixes matched to specific regions have been launched by British Seed Houses.

Each of the 12 Regional Wild Flora Mixtures is based on the National Vegetation Classification survey, which identifies individual plant habitats throughout the country.

That ensures flowers planted on headland strips, hedgerows and set-aside are ecologically correct for the area and suit its soil type, rainfall, altitude and aspect, says the company.

The cheapest mix – traditional hay meadow – costs £49.50/kg. Most others are similarly priced, though the specialist coastal reclamation mix is £78.40/kg. Sowing rates vary from 3-5g/sq m.
