MLC faces uncertain future in Scotland

THE impending devolution of Scotland means an uncertain future for the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) north of the border.

The Scottish National Party and the Liberal Democrats have both said they would aim to create a separate marketing body to promote Scottish meat.

Both political parties are two of the major contenders in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Scottish livestock producers pay about £6m a year to the MLC in Milton Keynes but only get back £1m for the Scotch Quality Beef and Lamb Association.
